Teachers to be trained in Japanese

NEW DELHI: For an increasing number of young Indian IT professionals going to Japan, a sound knowledge of Japanese language is a must.

But the number of Indian teachers capable of imparting Japanese language skills at present is below 5,000, it was stated at a seminar organised here jointly by Delhi Public School, the Japan Foundation and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) this past week.

JICA, the technical assistance agency of the Japanese Government, is offering a chance to Japanese language professors to train school-level teachers in India, it was announced.

Focus on alcoholism and drug abuse

NEW DELHI: Inaugurating a daylong workshop on alcohol and drug de-addiction here on Saturday, Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri said over six crore Indians were dependent on alcohol and another 80 lakhs on drugs like cannabis and tranquillisers.

Organised by the Delhi Government's Department of Prohibition in collaboration with the IMA Academy of Medical Specialities, the workshop was attended by many general practitioners who received training in alcohol and drug abuse treatment.

Sheila to inaugurate Moolchand underpass

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will dedicate the Moolchand underpass in South Delhi to Delhiites at a function here this Monday.

According to the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation, Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken will be the chief guest, while Tourism and Education Minister Arvinder Singh will preside over the function.

Iran Embassy to honour scholars

NEW DELHI: The newly instituted Sa'adi Awards will be conferred on five Indian scholars for promoting Persian language and literature at a ceremony here this Sunday to mark the 28th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, the Cultural Counsellor of the Embassy of Islamic Republic of Iran, Murtaza Shafi Shakeeb, said: "The award and a letter of appreciation will be presented to five scholars from Delhi, Kashmir and Lucknow this year. The awardees will receive Rs. 50,000 in cash and a citation each."
