MAKING A POINT: Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora with retired Judge Ranganath Mishra and others at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.

BHUBANESWAR: A busy chowk near Nariman Point in India's business capital Mumbai will be named after Sergeant Raj Kishore Sahu, the first martyr from Orissa in the Kargil War.

"The martyr will be honoured in Mumbai. A chowk will be named after the brave soldier who made supreme sacrifice,"

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora told newsmen on the sidelines of the convocation at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here on Saturday.

Mr. Deora extended an invitation to parents of Sahu to attend the programme.

Sergeant Sahu, a flight engineer, lost his life when his helicopter was brought down over Indian territory by a surface-to-air missile during the war on May 28, 1999.

The Union Minister went straight to the parents of Sahu soon after he entered the venue of the convocation ceremony.

Petrol pump sanctioned

Mr. Deora even introduced the martyr's parents to students and all dignitaries present in the hall.

Martyr's father Krushna Chandra Sahu, who is nearing his retirement, said:

"I have come here to express my gratitude to the government for speedy release of the petrol pump that did not happen in the case many martyrs' families."

The Petroleum Ministry would make sincere efforts to sort out any problem faced by the family in running the petrol pump that was awarded after Sergeant Sahu attained martyrdom, Mr. Deora said.

Mr. Deora, who is a trustee of Bhavan's Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and Information Technology, gave away certificates to students.

Stone laid

He laid the foundation stone for a separate block devoted to management classes on the premises of BVB here.

Among others, former Chief Justice of Supreme Court Ranganath Mishra spoke on the occasion.
