Parents allege dowry death; husband, father-in-law held

NEW DELHI: In a suspected case of dowry death, the husband and father-in-law of a woman have been arrested by the police hours after she was found dead under highly mysterious circumstances at her residence in Chittranjan Park here over the weekend.

According to the police, 24-year-old Shefali committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan on Friday evening. Her father and other relatives reached Delhi from Faridabad after they were informed of the incident by her in-laws.

Her father Kuldeep Bhatia alleged that she was being harassed by her husband Sandeep Chopra and other family members for not bringing enough dowry. He alleged that she was murdered and then hanged. Her maternal uncle Rajesh said she was a girl with a strong will power and could not have committed suicide.

Her relatives hurled stones and bricks at her in-laws' house, breaking the windowpanes on Friday.

A native of Faridabad, Shefali was married to Sandeep in March last year. The couple have a 20-day-old son, Dhruv. Her in-laws own a sweets shop in Kailash Colony.

Sandeep and his father Chamanlal Chopra have been arrested.
