TNEB to deny power supply to buildings violating rules

V.S. Palaniappan

Officers instructed to verify documents

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has directed its chief engineers and superintending engineers, in charge of distribution circles, to refuse power connections to commercial and multi-storeyed buildings constructed in violation of rules.

The TNEB has instructed its field officers to verify building plan permission, completion and compliance certificates issued by competent authorities before giving electricity supply.

The competent authority includes new township development authority, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority or any authority designated by the Government for issuing planning permission, completion and compliance certificate.

The TNEB directive follows the Madras High Court directions in its order on a writ petition regarding regularisation of buildings with deviations in building plan permission. The instructions issued now supersede the earlier orders issued by the Energy Department and circular by the Electricity Board in July 2004.

In the case of individual buildings, there would be no restrictions on compliance. In the case of multi-storied buildings, planning permission and compliance certificate must be insisted upon for electricity connections.
