HYDERABAD: Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat has underscored the need for immediate steps to help the members of the Muslim community solve their socio-economic problems.

He traced the backwardness of the minority community to the days of British Raj when Muslims were discriminated against in social and economic sectors following their revolt against the imperialists. The Sachar committee report brought out the fact that the backwardness of the community is continuing 60 years after the country attained Independence.

"The seeds of differential treatment were sown during the British rule and it is unfortunate that we could not overcome the problems so far," he said. Mr. Karat was speaking at a meeting organised to commemorate the 150 years of the First War of Indian Independence in 1857 organised by the Concerned Citizens Forum of old city here on Saturday.

Imperialism

Stating that the policies of imperialism were continuing, he cited the problems that had been created in Iraq and Afghanistan where the United States was adopting the "divide and rule" policy. "The US ambassador's statement that his country was watching with interest the visit of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to Iran is nothing but a threat posed to the proposed gas pipeline project between India and Iran," he said. It was unfortunate that there was no strong response from the Indian Government. Editor of `Siasat' daily Zahed Ali Khan presided over the meeting while CPI Rajya Sabha member Aziz Pasha, CPI (M) MP P. Madhu, CPI and CPI (M) State secretaries K. Narayana and B.V. Raghavulu spoke.
