Showcasing industries of Madurai in style

MADURAI: What is so special about Madurai?

Temples, idlis, jasmine and sungudi saris. The list has one more addition to it. Wondering what it is? Have you ever thought of the industries that have been thriving successfully for decades in the city?

The Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) has organised a `Pride of Madurai Hall' to showcase the industrialisation of the Temple City at the ongoing Ideal Home Exhibition on Tamukkam Grounds.

The stall put up by TVS lists out the company's achievements.

A wide range of rubber belts are there in the Fenner Conveyor Belting Private Limited section and Hi-Tech Arai Limited, Madurai's multinational company, exhibits oilseeds and moulded rubber products.

Winways presents its two software -- Oxygen for the Enterprise (O2E ERP suite) and WESMAP, a single-point school and college management software. It also offers an exhibition offer of LAMP, a skill set for web applications domain all over the world.

A chart with details on population of Madurai district, percentage of literacy, natural resources, industries along with mega-size photographs of Meenakshi Amman Temple tank, Teppakulam and `jallikattu' excite the onlookers.

The hall has 19 stalls showcasing the products and history of the following units — Aravind Eye Hospitals, Devi Pesticides, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Fortune Pandiyan Hotel, Hotel Taj Retreat, Madras Suspensions, India Foods, The Metal Powder Company, Lanxess India, A & T Network Systems and DotCom Infoway.

The Pride of Madurai Hall was inaugurated by D.J. Dinakkaren, Corporation Commissioner, on Saturday.

Pointing out that small-scale industry was the backbone of the country's economy, B.T. Bangera, Managing Director, Hi-Tech Arai, said that small units should form clusters in various sectors to meet global competition.

The MADITSSIA president, P.T. Krishnamoorthy, S. Aravind and KR. Gnanasambandan, former presidents, spoke.
