HYDERABAD: Learning is no more a drudgery for them. Instead, it is a fun-filled affair. Students of United Public School, Hasan Nagar, will now find it hard to play truant. The YI (Young Indians) Akshara Learning Resource Centre has livened up an otherwise dull routine. Thanks to the YI, a Confederation of Indian Industry initiative, students of this school situated in a slum, have a Montessori type of learning centre. They have simple learning aids to supplement the text book.
First in the State
Hyderabad Collector R. Chandravadan inaugurated the Akshara LRC on Saturday and watched the kids taking an instant liking to the educational games. This is the first such centre to be opened in the State. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Chandravadan wanted the facility to be extended to more such schools in old city. He hinted at entering into a MoU with the YI for infrastructure building in slums. Government would be ready to partner with YI, even if it contributes 20 per cent of the cost. He urged the Visaka Industries to erect sheds in schools and hospitals. The corporate sector has a responsibility to give back to the society.
Foundation
Basheeruddin Babukhan, former Minister and convenor, managing committee of United Public School, said the Foundation for Economic and Educational Development had set up eight schools, including three in Hyderabad. The Foundation disbursed scholarship of Rs. 6.21 crores to 16,000 poor and meritorious students in the State for the academic year 2006-07. It was proposed to increase the number of beneficiaries to 18,000, he said. Sivakumar Jayraman, Chairman, Hyderabad chapter of CII YI, proposed a vote of thanks.
