PUDUKOTTAI: The Government has sanctioned Rs. 42.22 crore for implementing a comprehensive drinking water supply scheme to benefit the coastal habitations in Manmelkudi and Avudaiyarkoil in the district. The scheme, to be implemented under Small and Medium Town Infrastructure Development Scheme and Tamil Nadu Minimum Need Programme, will also benefit wayside habitations. A total of 787 habitations in Pudukottai and 39 in Thanjavur will get the supply. Residents of all 303 habitations in Avudayarkoil and 262 in Manamelkudi will be the largest beneficiaries of the scheme to be implemented by Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board. It envisages supply to 116 habitations in Aranthangi block, 57 in Arimalam, 29 in Pudukottai, 17 in Gandharvakottai and three in Tiruvarankulam block in the district. In Thanjavur district, the scheme will benefit 39 wayside habitations in Thanjavur, Tiruvaiyaru and Boodalur panchayat unions. The scheme has been necessitated in view of high level of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and iron content in the underground sources in the coastal parts. "Our efforts in drilling deep borewells are not only expensive but often result in seawater intrusion," says the Executive Engineer, TWAD Board, Pudukottai, C.V. Rajan. The source of the water scheme will be at the Coleroon river in Tirukattupalli in Thanjavur district. Three collector wells will be set up. The District Collector, S. J. Chiru, said that pipelines to a cumulative length of 160 km would be laid and 302 tanks constructed.
