This Day That Age
"If colleges and universities are to be of any use, educated men going out of colleges must lead the people in politics and Government. Otherwise, democracy will be just misrule," observed Mr. C. Rajagopalachari while delivering an address in Tiruchi on February 10 in connection with the Madras University centenary celebrations. Rev. Fr. Jerome D'Souza, Rector, Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur, presided. The St. Jospeh's College grounds, where the function was organised, and the recently-constructed stadium, wherefrom Rajaji delivered the address, were well decorated. Mr. G. Varadachari, Principal, National College, and Secretary of the Celebrations Committee, in his welcome address, praised the great services rendered by Rajaji and described him as one possessing a combination of rare qualities of head and heart and a subtle intellect, which could penetrate to the core of any subject. After distributing prizes to winners in various competitions, Rajaji said people might wonder what was the meaning of his statement that educated men going out of colleges must lead the people in politics and Government for the proper functioning of democracy, when actually university men were conspicuously absent in the present legislatures and in the nomination lists of candidates. He also recalled how it was a not a new statement he was making, but had said the same thing at Calcutta in March 1948 and again in August 1948, addressing graduates in Madras.
