BANGALORE: It was a test for agile mind and sharp memory. Just as they were busy making calculations using abacus, their parents waited eagerly, expecting them to perform well in the first State-level U C MAS Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition held here on Sunday. Over 5,000 children from across the State participated in the competition. The organisers formed 10 batches to help all children to take part in the competition. According to Brijesh S. Yadav, a student of Frank Anthony's Public School, who has won a prize in the national abacus event, said that abacus would help in solving mathematical problems faster. Brijesh Yadav said, "We have to answer 150 questions in five minutes using the abacus or our memory." D.T. Srinivas, a former KAS officer whose son participated in the State -level competition, said that abacus had helped his son to perform better in school. Home Minister M.P. Prakash inaugurated the State-level competition at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium here.
