SIRSI: All gram panchayats in Karnataka will have public libraries by the end of this year. There are 3,251 libraries in gram panchayats and to mark Suvarna Karnataka, 2,515 libraries will be started, P.Y. Rajendrakumar, Director of Department of Public Libraries, Bangalore, said. He was speaking to presspersons at the circuit house Sirsi on Saturday. The Public Libraries Department has set aside Rs. 6.90 crore to purchase books this year. The bulk purchase includes 80 percent Kannada books and 20 percent books of other languages. He said digitization of Kannada books was in progress and out of the one lakh Kannada books published, 46 lakh pages had been digitized. This will make Kannada books more popular, he added. District librarian P. Manjunath was present.
