GUWAHATI: Fancied Gagan Narang (Andhra Pradesh) narrowly missed the meet record by a margin of 0.3 points as he took the individual gold in the men's 10m air rifle event in the shooting competitions of the 33rd National Games at the 4th AP Battalion ranges, Kahlipara, on Sunday.
Having topped the field and bettered the first round record of 594 set by Sammer Ambekar in Hyderabad by a point, Gagan was tipped to erase the record for the final as well. But he could finish only with 697.6 points as against the Ambekar's existing record of 697.9 points, with a total of 102.6 points in the final. P.T. Reghunath (Services) took the silver with 691.9 points while M. Rajesh (Karnataka), who had best score of 103.0 in the final, gunned down the bronze with 691.0 points.
The other final scheduled for the day had to be postponed as the organisers could only complete the first round competition in the men's 50m pistol, due to the malfunctioning of the equipments caused by periodic power failure. The final will now be held on Monday.
The results: 10m air rifle (individual): 1. Gagan Narang (AP), 697.9 points, 2. P.T. Reghunath (SSCB), 691.9, 3. M. Rajesh (Kar), 691.0.
Team: 1. Maharashtra (Navanath Fatarde 586, Phoolchand Bangar 588, Ashok Karande 587), 1761 points, 2. Tamil Nadu (Deepak Tudey 589, Dheeraj Kumar 578, Sudakar Kakade 589), 1756, 3. Andhra Pradesh (Gagan Narang 595, Vignan Tej 588, Vijay Parthasarathy 568), 1751.
