Assumes charge of biodiversity board

KOCHI: V.S. Vijayan, the former director of the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, Coimbatore, recently took over as chairman of the Kerala State Biodiversity Board. Mr. Vijayan, a native of Cherai, near Kochi, has conducted studies on birds, forests, wetland ecosystems, and environmental and conservation policy issues. He has earlier served at the Bombay Natural History Society and the Kerala Forest Research Institute, Thrissur. — Staff Reporter

`Criticising judges an unhealthy trend'

KOCHI: Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi came down heavily on people criticising the Judiciary for verdicts that they did not like. The trend would erode the credibility of the Judiciary, he said after inaugurating a three-day annual general meeting of the Federation of Press Trust of India Employees' Unions here on Sunday. Mr. Ravi said that a judicial pronouncement might not be acceptable to all but criticising judges in the public and attacking them personally did not augur well for a democratic set up. — Staff Reporter

Spirit seized

PALAKKAD: The Excise and Sales Tax Department officials seized a lorry with 12,145 litres of spirit, hidden in 347 cans under coconut husk, at the Govindapuram checkpost here on Sunday. The lorry from Karnataka was going to Cherthala. The spirit is estimated to cost Rs.15 lakh in the liquor market. The driver of the truck was arrested. — Staff Reporter

ADB accord flayed

KOTTAYAM: The general assembly of the Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council has called against what they termed the adverse provisions in the agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB). The provision to do away with free water supply through public taps in a phased manner would adversely affect the weaker sections of society, including the majority members of the Latin Catholic community, who live in coastal areas, a resolution adopted by the assembly said. — Special Correspondent

Pattaya mela on Saturday

MALAPPURAM: The district will witness a mass pattaya mela on February 17 in which nearly 3,000 landless people will be given title deeds. The mela will be as part of the mega pattaya distribution announced by the State Government. Minister for Revenue K.P. Rajendran and Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty will take part in the mela to be held at the Collectorate.

Sitting of expert panel today

PALAKKAD: The sitting of the expert committee headed by M.K. Prasad, Chairman and Director of Information Kerala Mission, for assessing the permissibility of Kerala Sponge Iron Limited at Malampuzha to operate at the present site, will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. in the Collectorate Conference Hall. The Government constituted the expert committee with three other members - Dr. Sivasankara Pillai, Dr. Ajayakumar Varma and Dr. R.V.G. Menon.

IIM-K calls for technical assistant

KOZHIKODE: The Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-K), needs a technical assistant-web site management on contract basis on a consolidated monthly remuneration of Rs.6,000. The candidates should have passed three-year diploma in computer application/BCA in first class and must possess two years experience in designing, maintaining and managing web sites using the latest web tools. Candidates with BE/B.Tech. (computer science)/MCA with one year relevant experience may also apply.
