Humnabad calm

BIDAR: The trouble-torn Humnabad town in Bidar district which witnessed a clash between groups of two communities over a petty issue and police firing in which one person was injured on Saturday, is limping back to normality. Shops and business establishments in the town were open today and police continued to maintain a strict vigil. Minister for Agriculture Marketing Bandappa Kashampur and former Minister Mirajuddin Patel visited the trouble torn town and held discussions with the leaders of both the communities. — Special Correspondent

Kannada meet

Udupi: The 74th All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelan will be held at the MGM College grounds in the last week of October. The decision regarding the venue of the sammelan was taken at the meeting of the working committee and advisory committee of the Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Parishath here on Saturday, according to the president of Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Parishath U. VTU convocation

Belgaum: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is likely to address the young engineering graduates at the annual convocation of Visvesvaraya Technological University to be held on February 25, according to sources here on Saturday. However, though sources in VTU confirmed about the only technological university in the State having requested the President to deliver the convocation address, they could not immediately confirm about Dr. Kalam's programme.

Senior officials from the intelligence wing inspected the Jnana Sangam campus of the VTU at Machhe on Saturday, sources said.

Arrested

GULBARGA: The Gulbarga district police on Sunday arrested a man and seized eight bundles of 100-rupee note currency and a country made revolver at Bandur Cross near industrial township of Shahabad in Chitapur taluk. According to reports reaching here, the arrested has been identified as Siddaramappa and he is allegedly to have cheated many persons promising to provide fake currency notes. The police who conducted raid on his house seized a police dress and chemicals used for changing the colours of currency notes. — Special Correspondent

Assets found

BELLARY: The Bellary Lokayukta police on Sunday found Nagireddy, a forester working in Hospet, possessing assets worth Rs. 1 crore, which is stated to be disproportionate to his know sources of income. The police found the forester possessing 500 gm of gold, 3.397 kg of silver, and cash of Rs. 85,900. They have also found him owning two two-storeyed buildings, a complex-cum-godown, vehicles including a Tata Sumo, a tractor, and four motorcycles. Mr. Reddy joined the forest department as a guard and was promoted as a forester in 1987. — Staff Correspondent

Lauded

TUMKUR: Maharashtra Governor S.M. Krishna and Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on lauded the services of Sri Somekatte Kadasiddeswara Math to society. Mr. Krishna and Mr. Deshmukh visited the math and offered puja for more than four hours. Several Congress leaders accompanied them . Mr.Deshmukh's wife and children took part in the puja. Mr. Krishna said the Kadasiddeswara Mutt was the most ancient religious centre with a rare spiritual background. — Staff Correspondent

Commit suicide

MYSORE: Two persons allegedly committed suicide in the city on Saturday in two separate incidents. Auto driver Ramachandra (54), a resident of Jayanagar, committed suicide by hanging himself in his room. In another incident, Mohammad Rasool (22), a resident of Kurimandi, committed suicide by hanging. The police have registered cases at Ashokpuram and N.R. Mohalla Police Stations.

Rally

MYSORE: Over 1,000 members of Corporation Bank Employees' Union, who came to the city from various parts of the country, to participate in the 21st Triennial Conference, took out a rally under the banner of All India Bank Employees' Federation from Town Hall to Kala Mandira on Saturday urging the Union Government to fulfil their demands. Later in the evening, the conference was inaugurated by general secretary of federation, C.H. Venkatachalam.

Protest

BIJAPUR: Arrack vendors staged a protest in Indi town against the Government's proposal to impose a ban on the sale of arrack from the next financial year. The protesters, led by president of the Indi Taluk Arrack Vendors Association Mallesh Chincholi, took out a procession which culminated in front of the Assistant Commissioner's office.

Mr. Chincholi said there were over 80 arrack outlets in the taluk, which employed around 300 people. If the ban was imposed, it would deprive these people of their livelihood. It would also cause the illicit liquor business to thrive, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Identified

BIJAPUR: The three labourers, who died on Saturday night when an arch under construction collapsed, were identified as Shivappa Wangi (23) of Atharga (Indi taluk), Appasaheb Nivaragi (30) of Inchgeri and Yusuf Abdulsattar Sheik (35) of Adike Galli here. The arch was being built by the district Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee on the outskirts of the city. The mishap occurred while a concrete slab was being laid on top of the arch.

Vedike to stage `rail roko'

BELGAUM: The Karnataka Rakshna Vedike has announced that it would restrict its protest to organising "rail roko" at the Belgaum railway station at noon in response to the Statewide bandh called on Monday to protest against the "unjust" verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

Announcing this here on Sunday, KRV district president Rajeev Topannavar said all KRV workers had been asked not to venture into any other protest anywhere in the district but converge at the railway station in large numbers. He appealed to workers not to indulge in violence during the protest. — Staff Correspondent

Festival ends

GULBARGA: The two-day 4th Pratibha Gulbarga Youth Festival 2007 came to an end on Sunday with students from different colleges presenting a folk dance performance. A fancy dress competition was also held. Inspector General of Police R.K. Datta, working president of the Nutan Vidyalaya Education Society Muralidhar Rao and Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey were present at the valedictory function at the Nutan Vidyalaya Degree College. The winners of different competitions held for college students were given medals and certificates.
