CHENNAI : More than 4.78 lakh children were administered polio vaccine in the second phase of the pulse polio campaign in Chennai. A door-to-door vaccination will be conducted over the course of this week to ensure that all children are covered. Some 1126 booths, staffed by more than 5000 health workers, anganwadi workers, school children, Rotarians and volunteers, were open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the quest to keep Chennai polio-free. The railways, which had previously run a limited campaign, had extended it to a 24-hour campaign over three days, said Corporation officials. Central and Egmore railway stations were among the locations frequented by large groups of people chosen for setting up booths, besides the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus at Koyambedu, bus stops and markets. As part of the special efforts made to cover all groups of people, pamphlets were dropped off at all apartments in multi-storeyed buildings in areas such as Thiruvanmiyur in and around the IT corridor. These are areas where it is difficult to canvass for such campaigns, since residents prefer to go to private doctors, officials said.

In Ambattur Municipality, 41,349 of the targeted 40,147 children were immunised at the 61 booths including six mobile booths and three transit booths set up by them. Municipal Health Officer S. Rajasekaran said that the remaining children would be immunised through door-to-door visits in the next few days. More than 300 health and Nutrition staff were involved in this exercise. The drive was successful in Tambaram Municipality, officials said. Polio drops were administered to 19,810 in the 30 booths, against the targeted 18,375 children. Municipal Commissioner R. Sekar said it was possible because they covered more floating population than before. In Pallavaram Municipality, 22415 children were administered polio drops. The municipality set up 33 booths, which included one booth each at Pallavaram and Chromepet railway stations. Those children brought by their parents to Pallavaram and Chromepet bus stops were also given polio drops, said S. Purushothaman, Sanitary Officer, Pallavaram Municipality.
