Steps to ensure peace during today's bandh

BANGALORE: The police have taken precautionary measures to ensure peace during Monday's State-wide bandh called by various organisations against the final verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, said Director-General and Inspector-General of Police K.R. Sreenivasan.

Talking to presspersons here on Sunday, Mr. Sreenivasan said he had discussions with senior police officers and reviewed the security arrangements. He said the police presence has been strengthened in Chamarajanagar, Mysore, Mandya and parts of Bangalore city. He said instructions have been sent to those concerned asking them to carry out mobile patrolling on the national highways for preventing any traffic blockade.

Ban order

Bangalore city Police Commissioner Neelam Achuta Rao said the city police would enforce an order prohibiting movement of people in groups of more than four persons from Sunday midnight to Monday midnight. He said no organisation has sought permission to hold any rallies on Monday.

He said 20,000 policemen would be on duty in different parts of the city on Monday. This includes men from the Central Industrial Security Force, the State Reserve Police from Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala, and the Rapid Action Force.

The policemen deputed from different parts of the State for providing security for Aero India will also be deployed.

The Railway authorities have deployed additional men from the Railway Protection Force to provide security to railway stations, the Police Commissioner said.

The city police have deployed more men in areas including Rajajinagar, Kamakshipalya, Magadi Road, Mahalakshmi Layout, Nandini Layout, Peenya and Yeshwanthpur in the city.

The police have taken 1,000 persons into preventive custody.
