dated February 13, 1957: Polling programme

About 193 million people representing half the population of India will begin casting their votes on February 24 in the general elections in the world's biggest democracy. Polling will begin in 19 constituencies in Orissa and Punjab on the opening day. The tempo of polling will be maintained during the 19-day poll period ending on March 14 except for the snow-bound regions of Himachal Pradesh where polling will be held later. On six of the 14 days in March, polling will be in progress in over 400 constituencies, tapering to ten constituencies on March 13, but closing with polling in about 50 constituencies in West Bengal and Punjab. The heaviest day will be February 25 when as many as 594 constituencies spread over nine States and two Centrally-administered areas will go to the polls.
