This Day That Age
The bi-weekly vestibuled air-conditioned deluxe express train service between Madras and Delhi commenced at the Madras end on February 11, when the train steamed off the Central Station with a complement of about 45 passengers. The train had left Delhi on February 9 on its maiden journey and reached Madras on February 11 morning. Mr. T.A. Joseph, General Manager, Southern Railway, Mr. K. Srinivasan, Public Relations Officer, Mr. S.K. Mukherjee, Chief Commercial Superintendent, and other officers were present at the station when the train steamed off. There were also a large number of spectators who had a look into the compartments. The service comprises one upper class air-conditioned coach with all amenities, one air-conditioned restaurant with modern equipment for preparation of food articles, two non-air-conditioned luggage and brake vans with generators and three air-conditioned third class coaches. Each third class coach has a path in the middle and rows of seats, two on either side. There is no separate sleeping accommodation as such in the third class, but the seats being of the tilting type are expected to enable the passengers to relax. The service will cover the distance in 41 hours - four hours less than the time taken by the GT Express.
