Srikakulam: With a view to helping HIV patients, an anti-retroviral therapy (ART) centre will be set up in the district. It would start functioning by March, according to District Collector V. Nagendra Vishnu. ART therapy would help reduce the seriousness of AIDS. Mr.Vishnu said AIDS patients who got registered at the centre would get costly medicines for treatment free of cost. ART would prolong the life of AIDS patients consdierably, he said. State Coordinator of ART centres Iswarya, who met the Collector at the grievance cell here on Monday, requested him to allot the required staff to man the ART centre in the district. Dr. Iswarya said the staff would have to undergo training at other places. The Collector agreed to provide the staff by the end of the month. Dr. Iswarya said that already 13 ART centres had been set up in the State and four more were proposed at Srikakulam, Nizamabad, Khammam and Eluru. So far as many as 35,000 patients had registered at these centres, Dr.Iswarya said.
