We will not go back on promises: Rangasamy

Statue of former MLA unveiled

Puducherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has said that his Government has implemented the assurances given on the floor of the Assembly.

Unveiling a statue of former MLA and `Suyamariyadhai Sudar' M. A. Shanmugham erected by the Government at a cost of Rs 9.98 lakh at Marapalam on Sunday, Mr. Rangasamy said the ruling Congress would never go back on the promises given to the people during elections in May last year. Installation of Shanmugham's statue was an assurance given to the legislators in the Assembly, he said. (Shanmugham was an MLA elected from Kuruvinatham to the territorial Assembly on Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ticket in 1980. He was the first non-official chairman of Pondicherry Housing Board).

Statue for

Uthiravelu soon

Mr. Rangasamy said the Government would soon install a statue of former MLA and labour leader of Puducherry P.Uthiravelu.

Rangasamy thanked

Dr M. A. S. Subramanian, MLA, and son of the late Shanmugham thanked the Chief Minister for erecting the statue of his father in response to the representations made from different quarters.

Assembly Speaker R Rahdakrishnan, Agriculture Minister V Vaithilingam, Government Whip M Kandasamy, Convenor of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam R.V.Janakiraman, the party MLA S.P.Sivakumar and the chairperson of Puducherry Municipal council Dr B.Sridevi paid tributes to Shanmugam.

Held for protest

Meanwhile, police sources said they took into custody around 30 persons who had held demonstration near the venue.

They were protesting against installation of the statue of Shanmugham. They wanted the Government to explain the norms adopted in deciding erection of statues.
