Plea to stop dredging in Adam's Bridge

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: Activists of the Movement Against Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project have urged the Union Ministry of Shipping to stop dredging in the Adam's Bridge, saying "it will destroy marine life" in the Gulf of Mannar and "adversely affect" biodiversity and livelihood of fishermen.

Addressing reporters here on Monday, Jesurethinam of Nagapattinam claimed a team of the organisation, which visited Rameswaram and the surrounding areas on February 1 and 10, had gathered from fishermen that there had been a reduction in the catch. Several species were migrating to other areas due to the noise pollution caused by the dredging.

M. Jeeva of Madurai alleged that the dredging would affect the clear water zone in the Gulf of Mannar and result in turbid water entering the area.
