Oriya writer Jagannath Prasad Das
NEW DELHI: Eminent Oriya writer Jagannath Prasad Das has been selected for the prestigious Saraswati Samman for the year 2006. Dr. Das was chosen for the coveted annual literary award instituted by the K. K. Birla Foundation here for his collection of poems in Oriya titled "Parikrama". The selection committee for the award, headed by former Chief Justice of India G. B. Patnaik, comprised a dozen distinguished men and women of letters. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs and a citation. Dr. Das is the third Oriya writer to get the award, preceded by Ramakanta Rath (for "Sri Radha" in 1992) and Manoj Das (for "Amruta Phala", 2000). Malayalam poet K. Ayyappa Panikar was the recipient of the Saraswati Samman in 2005.

This year's winner, popularly known as "J P" in literary circles, was born in 1936. He quit the Civil Service in 1984 to fulfil his passion for writing.
