NELLORE: Claiming a major success in arresting six active members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Janashakti group, the police said that a major blow had been inflicted on the relatively insignificant but active Maoist faction in the Rayalaseema region. With the Chittoor police arresting Rapur forest area committee secretary N. Thyagaraju alias Jayachandra alias Eswar and G. Munaiah alias Bhaskar alias Suryam of Alturpadu village of Dakkili mandal and four other dalam members at Jeevakona on Saturday, the Janashakti suffered a major setback and has been almost wiped out in the region, Superintendent of Police (SP) K. Laxmi Reddy told The Hindu on Sunday. According to the police, Eswar is organising committee secretary of Nellore, Chittoor, Kadapa and Prakasam regions, while Munaiah is Rayalaseema regional secretary of the Janashakti. The dalam allegedly killed Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader D. Ramana Reddy of Dakkili in 2005 and the accused in the murder case -- Muzeeb, Venkat Rao and Kiran -- are at large. Dalam members had even burnt an earthmover in 2006 at Mopur . Janashakti group gained prominence in the border mandals of the district as well as in the Badwel area following the killing of Congress leader S. V. Rami Reddy last year. Subsequently, the group merged with the CPI (Maoists). The Maoists have formed three dalams -- Kasinayana, Gadikota and Jyoti dalam. But they became one dalam after the encounter at Jyotikshetram of Anantapur in which key Maoists were killed with one of them being the bodyguard of Obulesu.
