Resignation sought

Thiruvananthapuram: The Yuva Janata Dal has sought the resignation of MPs from the State if the Salem Railway Division becomes a reality. In a statement here on Monday, they said the MPs seemed to be surprised by the unity with which the MPs from Tamil Nadu were fighting to protect the interests of their State. They had checkmated the Kerala MPs on the Mullaperiyar issue too. The UPA Government was bowing to pressure for fear of the DMK withdrawing support. — Special Correspondent

Guidelines issued

Thiruvananthapuram: The guidelines for collecting liquidated damages from those who vacated seats after the completion of the admission process to professional degree courses in 2006 have been issued. Damages should not be collected if the managements filled the seats. In the case of scheduled and other eligible communities, students from the same sections or in their absence other sections should be admitted to the seats on rotation as per rules without collecting damages. The students of the State who do not belong to the scheduled or other eligible communities have been exempted from the payment of damages if their annual family income is below Rs.1 lakh. — Special Correspondent

Train service cancelled

Thiruvananthapuram: The 2507 Ernakulam-Guwahati Express scheduled to leave Ernakulam at 8.35 p.m. on February 13 has been cancelled due to the cancellation of the incoming train. — Staff Reporter

NCC quota

Thiruvananthapuram: Applications will be accepted till March 9 to the seats reserved for NCC cadets in professional colleges in the State. Applications along with the copy of applications submitted to the Entrance Examination Commissioner and the certified copies of NCC certificates should be submitted at the NCC unit offices concerned by that date. The applications submitted directly at the Directorate will not be considered. The applications of cadets who secured a minimum of 75 marks for NCC will only be considered. The maximum mark is 500. — Special Correspondent

Regularisation cancelled

Thiruvananthapuram: The regularisation of 106 contract and or daily wagers in the Kerala State Transport Development Finance Corporation has been cancelled as both the initial appointment and the regularisation were found to be illegal. The appointments were made without advertising the vacancies. The regularisation was done without observing the reservation principle, sources said. The appointments to the institution will in future be made through the PSC. — Special Correspondent

Gita discourse

KOLLAM: In connection with the re-consecration of the Punalur Nellipalli Kaipuzha Sri Mahadevar Temple, a five-day discourse on Bhagavad Gita will be held from February 16. The programme will be led by Swamini Njaanabha Nishta from the Mangad Shantananda math. — Staff Reporter

Canal inauguration

ALAPPUZHA: The official inauguration of the beautified canals of the town will be held in April, a sub-committee meeting of the canal management society on Monday decided. Another meeting of the sub-committee will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on February 19 to finalise the details of the inaugural function. Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will preside over the meeting.

PALAKKAD: The O.M.C. Narayanan Namboodiripad Memorial Deviprasadam Trust awards were announced here on Monday. Sugathakumari, poet, got the award in the `Malayalam literature' category. Poomthottam Sankaranarayanan Namboodiri got the `Sanskrit scholar award.' The `Vedic scholar' award went to Churakkode Mekkat Krishnan Namboodiri.
