PROTEST CAMP: Three-year-old Rohan joins his mother at a dharna seeking the release of his grandfather near Sundarayya park in Hyderabad on Monday. PHOTO: G. KRISHNASWAMY
HYDERABAD: Three year-old Rohan was playing in his mother Aruna's lap blissfully unaware that she had just joined dozens of others in a relay hunger strike near Sundarayya Park, here, in a bid to focus the State Government's attention on release of lifers for good conduct. Participants in the agitation comprised close relatives of those serving life sentences for periods upwards of eight or nine years. Rohan's grandfather had been in jail for over 10 years now. The fast was launched by the Committee for Release of Prisoners. Human rights activist K.G. Kannabiran inaugurated the protest camp in the presence of State executive member of CPI T. Lakshminarayana. The protestors demanded scrapping of G.O. 12, which stayed implementation of GOs. 314 and 315 allowing for remission of prisoners based on good conduct. The CPI leader regretted that the process of identifying the prisoners to be released had not been undertaken since 2004. He wanted the prison committees to be `activated' and a list of 1,350 lifers, who were eligible for remission of sentence, approved to facilitate their early release.
