The Kerala High Court ruling that lending of genuine VCDs and DVDs issued by producers and distributors will not amount to copyright violation has come as a relief to thousands of video library owners in the State. The library owners who were on the warpath following raids conducted by the police on video libraries across the State had maintained that most of the VCDs seized by the police were not fake but genuine ones purchased from the copyright owners. According to them, VCDs were given on rent as per the provisions of the Copyright Act. At a press conference held in the city last week, the library owners who were on the verge of losing their livelihood following the raids had even requested the State Government for a scrutiny of the seized VCDs to bring out the truth. With the court verdict, the library owners feel their stand has been vindicated at last.
