Staff Reporter

Municipality draws Rs. 5.38 crore plan for it

ERODE: The Erode Municipal administration has already sent a detailed estimate for Rs. 13.68 crore and a report to the State Government on development works in Erode.

Erode Municipal Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj told The Hindu on Tuesday that the municipal council had decided to provide water to the residents daily. The council had drawn a Rs. 5.38-crore plan for it and sought fund from the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Town (UIDSSMT).

The Commissioner said along with the water supply scheme, the municipality had also decided to develop the Erode Municipal Central Bus stand at a cost of Rs. 2 crore and underground drainage in Edayankattuvalasu area at Rs. 50 lakh.

The Commissioner said out of the total amount, the Union Government would sanction 80 per cent subsidy and the Tamil Nadu Government 10 per cent. Only 10 per cent (Rs. 83.80 lakh) would be the municipality fund. He hoped within a month's time the fund would be sanctioned and steps would be taken to implement it.

Mr. Selvaraj said under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Project (IHSDP), the municipal administration had sought Rs. 5.30 crore for the development 15 slum areas in the Erode municipal area. If the fund was granted 60 per cent of it would be utilised for construction of houses in the slum area. The remaining amount would be used for development of roads, drainage and other infrastructure developments in the slum areas.

He said only 10 per cent of the cost would be collected from the beneficiaries and remaining 90 per cent as subsidy from the Union Government. He also added that the administration utilising the Union and State Government funds would develop all 12 unapproved layouts.

Erode Municipal chairman K. Kumar Murugesh said: "To provide uninterrupted water supply to the residents of Erode during summer, 250 HP additional electric motors would be fitted in the water pumping house. If water is available in the River Cauvery, they would collect the same using motors and if there is no water, the motors would be used to draw water from the big borewells sunk on the banks of Cauvery".

Mr Murugesh promised that in summer also the municipality would provide water to all residents.
