CHENNAI: Small and medium entrepreneurs can expect to get special concessions in this year's budget, according to Tamil Nadu Minister for Rural and Small Scale Industries Pongalur N. Palanisamy. At a summit on "Going Global to become SMEs of the future", organised by the Tamil Nadu State Council of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI-TNSC), he said the Government would also consider offering subsidies for industries in backward areas.
Industrial development
Listing the industrial estate upgrade programmes, cluster development programmes, the MSMED Act 2006, infrastructure investments and single window facilitation as measures aimed at spurring the growth of small units, he assured delegates that the Government was committed to industrial development. Saying that the current scenario of "inspector raj" is hampering the growth of the small units, FICCI-TNSC chairman M. Rafeeque Ahmed asked the Minister to ensure that the new Industrial Policy reduced government interference and allowed the small units to function independently. "In most SMEs, the boss is the CEO, the accountant, the salesman. He can't spend all his time talking to inspectors... Let SMEs concentrate on doing business." S. Seetharamaiah, chief executive officer, Susira Industries, echoed his plea. "With 40 statutory inspections a year, where is the time to think about going global," he asked. He urged the Government to open a "green channel" for small units to file returns online.
