Drive against illegal mosques dropped

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: Reconstruction work is progressing at a mosque demolished by the local administration after the Government backed off from a drive against illegal mosques to end a three-week standoff with students of a prominent women's madrasa.

Religious Affairs Minister Ejaz ul-Haq on Monday inaugurated the reconstruction of the Amir Hamza mosque at the same location that administration officials had earlier pronounced was out of bounds to any private construction as it was public land.

However, the students of the Jamia Hafsa seminary, who forcibly occupied a public library against the mosque demolition drive, said they would not end their protest until "all" their demands were met.
