News Analysis
In a report "Minor girl allowed to stay with husband" (February 10, 2007), the second paragraph was: "Closing a habeas corpus petition moved by her father, a Division Bench comprising Justices Dharma Rao Elipe and P.P.S. Janarthana Raja said: `She is now aged 17 years and 10 months and as such only two months are there for attaining majority. Moreover, she is happily living with the boy... At this juncture, we feel that the minority (status) is not a condition necessitating the girl to be placed in the custody of the father.'" The use of the word "majority" led to a query. A reader felt the term "becoming a major" would have been a better choice. Our Madurai Bureau clarifies that the words "majority" and "minority" were used in the judgment. The Oxford English Dictionary says that "majority" (mass noun) is the age at which a person is legally a full adult, usually either 18 or 21. "Minority" (mass noun) is the state or period of being under the age of full legal responsibility. A report "Narrow win for Bangladesh" ("Sport", February 10, 2007) incorrectly stated that Bangladesh posted a 13-run win over Zimbabwe in the third of four one-day internationals at Harare. Zimbabwe was bowled out for 214 and Bangladesh won by 14 runs, as mentioned in the scoreboard. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
