Chit fund starts distributing 7th instalment

CHENNAI: Alwarpet Benefit Fund has started distributing the seventh instalment of 5 per cent of the principal amount, subject to a minimum of Rs. 1,000, to fixed deposit holders from February 5. Cheques drawn on ICICI Bank, Nandanam branch, are being delivered by courier in batches according to the membership number of the depositors. Cheques are dispatched only through courier and will not be handed over in person, according to an ABF press release. — Special Correspondent

CBI probes Kerala power projects case

CHENNAI: The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), Chennai, of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken up investigation of a case relating to the alleged irregularities in awarding work of renovating and modernisation of some hydroelectric projects in Kerala to a Canadian company resulting in a huge loss to the Kerala Government.

Two former Chairmen of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), a former Principal Secretary to Government, Department of Power and a former Senior Vice-President of the foreign company are among the eight persons cited as accused in the First Information Report (FIR).

The case was earlier handled by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, Kerala. On the orders of the Kerala High Court in January this year, the Chennai ACB has taken up the probe, sources in the investigating agency said. — Special Correspondent

Distribution of aid to farmers

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi will inaugurate the Farmers Social Security Scheme by distributing aid to farmers and agricultural labourers on February 22. The event will be held in Thanjavur. — Special Correspondent

Railway IVRS system shutdown

CHENNAI: Due to system shutdown for maintenance purpose, the interactive voice response system (IVRS) and Internet booking will not be available between 21.00 hours on February 14 to 08.00 hours on February 15, says a Southern Railway release. — Special Correspondent

Karunanidhi's intervention sought

CHENNAI: General secretary of the State unit of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) A. Soundararajan on Tuesday called for the immediate intervention of the Chief Minister to find a solution to the dispute in a private cotton mill in Sivaganga district.

In a statement here, he said the mill workers had been agitating from November 2 last year to highlight their demand for a fair bonus for 2005 and 2006. But the mill management had been boycotting the conciliation talks held in the presence of the Joint Labour Commissioner in Madurai, he added. — Special Correspondent

MoU for collaborative research

COIMBATORE: The Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Avinashilingam University, will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Department of Oriental Medicinal Material and Processing, Kyung Hee University, South Korea, for collaborative research and training on February 14. — Staff Reporter

Two persons die in `jallikattu'

PUDUKOTTAI : Two persons were gored to death by bulls and over 200 injured in a `jallikattu' at Thennalur near Iluppur on Monday.

Bulls were brought from Madurai, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Manapparai as part of the annual festival at the Sri Muthumariamman Temple.

The police gave the names of the dead as M. Arujunan (70) of Sithambur village and K. Sadanandam (27) of Kattur village near Lalgudi in Tiruchi district.

Medical personnel from the Primary Health Centres in Parambur and Cauvery Nagar who camped at the village, treated the injured. About 20 persons who suffered grievous injuries were referred to the Annal Gandhi Government Headquarters Hospital in Tiruchi.

Training programme

PUDUKOTTAI : Rotary Club of Pudukottai and Venkateswara Polytechnic College organised two-day Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) training programme at the college recently.

The Rotary district governor-elect, Rotary International district 3000, R. Damodaran, inaugurated the camp.

Speaking on the occasion, he called upon the students to utilise the training camp to become good leaders in future.

S. Ilango, Jaycee national trainer, was the resource person.

About 60 students participated in the camp. The president of the Rotary Club of Pudukottai, S. Prithiviraj also spoke. — Staff Reporter

Free training on desktop publishing

ERODE: A ten-day entrepreneurship development programme on desk top publishing for the unemployed youth in and around Sathyamangalam will be conducted at the Central Library of Bannari Amman Institute of Technology from February 19 to March 1. No fee would be collected for the programme, said the College authorities in a press release on Tuesday.

Participants for the training should be below 35 years and passed Higher Secondary School exam. They would be given training in MS Office, Photoshop, Corel Draw and PageMaker. The authorities asked the youth to register their names on or before February 16 at the Central Library of the college. For details, contact: S. Sathyagraha centenary celebration

ERODE: The Erode District Congress Committee will celebrate the Sathyagraha centenary celebration on February 17 in Erode, said the president of the Erode District Congress Committee and Modakurichi MLA R.M. Palanisamy on Tuesday.

He said the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Krishnassamy, AICC General Secretary Veerappa Moily, Union Ministers E.V.K.S. Elangovan and G.K. Vasan will participate and address a public meeting at Karungalpalayam, Erode near the Gandhi statue.

Man gets life term

DINDIGUL: A fast track court here awarded life sentence to one person and a five-year jail term to two persons in a murder case on Tuesday. Four others were acquitted. The court awarded life sentence and imposed a fine of Rs.2,000 to Ayyappan and five- year term to Amar alias Amarnath, and Sahaya Mani Raj. An unidentified gang had murdered Henry and injured his friends Anandakumar and Selvam here in 1997. Police arrested and produced them in court. Three other accused were murdered while they were on bail. — Staff Reporter
