Delimitation of wards finalised in Gulbarga

Drastic changes in the boundaries of wards


  • Of the 256 seats in the civic bodies, 48 reserved for SCs
  • Of 106 general category seats, 38 reserved for women

    GULBARGA: The district administration and the election office here has finalised the delimitation and the number of wards under reservation category for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, women and Backward Classes in the Gulbarga City Municipal Corporation, city municipal councils, town municipal councils and town panchayats in Gulbarga district.

    Official sources told The Hindu here on Tuesday that the categorisation of wards in these bodies had been put on hold by the Government owing to legal complications.

    While there was no increase in seats in the Gulbarga City Municpal Corporation (55 seats), drastic changes in the boundaries of the wards had been made according to specifications laid down by the State Election Commission. The number of wards to be reserved for different categories according to norms fixed by the Election Commission had been completed and was waiting for Government approval.

    In Gulbarga district, there are two City Municipal Councils in Yadgir and Shahabad and five Town Municipal Councils of Aland, Chitapur, Sedam, Shahapur, and Surpur and Town Panchayats of Afzalpur, Chincholi, Gurmitkal and Jewargi. There had been an increase of four seats each in Yadgir City Municipal Council, Shahabad City Municipal Council and Surpur Town Municipal council after the completion of the delimitation process. The number of seats in Yadgir and Shahabad CMCs have gone up from 27 seats to 31. In the Surpur Town Municipal Council, the number of seats had gone up from 23 to 27 .

    Of the 256 seats in the two CMCs, five TMCs and four town panchayats, 48 had been reserved for Scheduled Castes, of which 20 had been reserved for women. Fifteen seats had been reserved for Scheduled Tribe of which 12 would go to women, 69 have been reserved for Backward Class (A), of which 24 would go to women and 18 seats reserved for Backward Class (B) and of which 9 would go to women. In the remaining 106 general category seats, 38 had been reserved for women.
