Gulbarga district Congress unit protests against Cauvery verdict

Special Correspondent

Government urged to continue stir till justice is done to Karnataka

  • Protesters submit memorandum, addressed to Governor
  • Tribunal accused of being `partisan'

REGISTERING PROTEST: Members of the Gulbarga District Congress Committee taking out a procession in Gulbarga on Tuesday.

GULBARGA: The Gulbarga District Congress Committee (DCC) on Tuesday took out a procession here to lodge their protest against the injustice meted out to Karnataka in the verdict delivered by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. They urged the State Government to continue a stir till justice is done to the State in the distribution of water.

The procession, led by the former Minister Qamar ul Islam and DCC president Allamprabhu Patil, later staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office and submitted a memorandum addressed to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi to the district authorities.

Senior leaders of the party, including Women Wing president and former Mayor Chandrika Parameshwar and zilla panchayat members, participated in the procession.

They shouted slogans against the tribunal for its "partisan attitude" and for supporting the claims of Tamil Nadu and rejecting the requirement of water in Karnataka.

The memorandum said Karnataka had been given a raw deal and a plea of the State Government to meet the drinking water requirements from the Cauvery to Bangalore city and other neighbouring towns had been rejected by the tribunal.

The memorandum said the reduction of the water to be released to Tamil Nadu from 205 tmcft to 192 tmcft would not benefit Karnataka since the tribunal had shifted the water releasing measuring centre from Mettur Dam to Bilegundulu Dam, which would result in Tamil Nadu getting an additional 25 tmcft between Bilegundlu reservoir to Mettur Dam.

Apart from this, the memorandum said the tribunal had allowed Tamil Nadu to utilise the share allotted to Kerala till the Kerala Government constructed a facility to store its share.
