Scholar gets back degree

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday came to the rescue of a doctor in philosophy and restored to him the doctorate degree, which had been annulled by the Government, citing irregularities.

The petitioner, D.N. Sudagade, had moved the court after the State Government had taken note of a report in a Kannada eveninger on the award of a Ph.D., degree to him. The eveninger, on April 23, 2001, published a report questioning the award of doctorate by Karnatak University, Dharwad.

The Vice-Chancellor had admitted that the viva voce for Mr. Sudagade was not conducted by the Chairman of the Department of Studies but by the Registrar. Justice Rammohan Reddy quashed the order of the State Government annulling the doctorate degree awarded to Mr. Sudagade, saying that while the Ph.D., was awarded under old rules, the order annulling the degree was issued under the new rules.
