MUMBAI : Abdul Qayyum, a March 1993 serial bomb blasts case accused and an associate of Dawood Ibrahim, was arrested on Tuesday in a special operation by the city crime branch. Police dismissed claims that Qayyum was actually deported from Dubai where he was picked up in connection with the murder of a diamond merchant and bookie. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Dhananjay Kamlakar told presspersons that Qayyum, arrested from Panjrapole on the Sion Trombay Road, fled to Dubai 15 years ago. He is wanted in seven cases registered in Mumbai, mostly relating to extortion. Qayyum used to handle the accounts for Dawood Ibrahim's gang. Defence lawyer in the serial blasts case, Farhana Shah, confirmed that Qayyum was implicated in the confessions of Abu Salem and Salim Mira Sheikh for his role in the Dighi landings of arms and ammunition before the blasts. He sold a 9 mm pistol to actor Sanjay Dutt for Rs. 40,000 in September 1992, which the actor had stated in his confession. Qayyum sold the weapon after Dawood's brother Anees Ibrahim instructed him to do so. Mr. Kamlakar said based on a tip-off the police arrested him at the Panjrapole junction where he was to meet some of his associates. A resident of Mahim, Qayyum was arrested in a case involving extortion and attempted murder of a businessman filed against him at the Juhu police station in 2000. Qayyum has six more cases against him under the Arms Act and the Explosives Act between 1983 and 2000, Mr. Kamlakar said.
