Samuels can play in the World Cup

Nagpur: West Indian cricketer Marlon Samuels, involved in conversation with a cricket bookie, will be allowed to play in the World Cup, if selected, as the ICC has not set a timeframe for probe into the matter.

The ICC media manager, Brian Murgatroyd, said the game's governing body would continue its investigation into Samuels's conversation with alleged bookie Mukesh Kochar, to whom he passed on information regarding batting and bowling orders for their first ODI against India here.

``If he is duly selected for the West Indies team, he is free to play and ICC was not imposing any restrictions on him though the council's Anti-Corruption Unit will continue its investigation,'' Mr. Murgatroyd told reporters here on Tuesday.

An ICC team, probing the conversation between Samuels and Kochar ahead of the January 21 One-Day International here, returned empty handed from Nagpur as the city Police could not hand over certain documents, the CD and the transcript of the telephone conversations.

The police have sought permission from the Home and External Affairs Ministries before handing over the documents as a non-governmental body (ICC) is involved in the matter. — PTI
