HASSAN: The bandh on Monday in protest against the award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal was near total in the district. All shops, hotels, business establishments, banks and Central Government offices remained closed. Buses stayed off the roads. The Mysore-Arsikere train that passed through the city was detained for more than two hours. Even in the border areas, shops and hotels were closed. More than 5,000 people participated in protest marches. In Hassan town, a large number of Muslims took part and in Arsikere town, a large number of Tamilians and Muslim women participated in protest rallies. In Gorur, which is 15 km from here, where the Hemavathi reservoir is located, a procession was taken out. The agitators demanded a removal of silt from the reservoir so that more water could be collected there. But no official was available at the Revenue Department office to receive their memorandum. When they threatened to jump into the Hemavathi River if the tahsildar did not turn up, the official came rushing to the office. In Holenarsipur the hometown of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Chief Minister H.D. Kumarawamy and Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna people, including Congress, Janata Dal (Secular) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists, formed a human chain at the Lakshmi Narasimha temple and then took out a procession.
