Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: The United Democratic Front (UDF) won the elections held to the post of municipal chairman in Thiruvalla with the backing of the three BJP members in the municipal council on Tuesday. R. Jayakumar (Congress) defeated his rival M.P. Gopalakrishnan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) by six votes.

Mr. Jayakumar secured 21 votes with the support of the BJP members in the 36-member council, while Mr. Gopalakrishnan managed to get only 15 votes in the elections. Thiruvalla Revenue Divisional Officer P.K. Syamala devi was the presiding officer. The election was conducted following the resignation of the former chairman Koshy Thomas (Congress) a month ago on the basis of an internal political agreement within the UDF.

As per the reported agreement, Mr. Jayakumar would have to step down after a 15-month tenure to facilitate the election of a Kerala Congress(M) member as his successor.
