Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: The District Congress Committee (DCC) has called for a Vigilance inquiry into the misappropriation of funds allotted to the City Corporation for disbursement of unemployment allowance. In a pressnote, DCC president V.S. Sivakumar said the issue had exposed the shoddy financial management in the Corporation administration. "It is appalling that the Corporation could not unearth the diversion of funds to the tune of Rs.34 lakhs for more than a year. A financial irregularity of this magnitude should not have escaped the attention of the Mayor and the standing committee concerned. By failing to identify the misappropriation or take corrective action on time, the Corporation has left hundreds of unemployed youth in the lurch," he said. Mr. Sivakumar pointed out that it was left to the Accountant General's audit to bring out the massive embezzlement. "There was no attempt to examine why the funds were not deposited in the treasury account for more than a year," he said.
