NEW DELHI: An estimated 65.1 per cent of the voters exercised their franchise in the Punjab Assembly elections, which were held peacefully on Tuesday, the Election Commission said. Elections were held for 115 out of the 117 seats. Voting in Valtoha and Beas was deferred. Counting of votes will take place on February 27.
Notice to NDTV
Deputy Election Commissioner R. Bhattacharya said the Commission issued a show-cause notice to NDTV for allegedly violating the electoral law, telecasting Insta Poll even as polling was in progress. The channel was giving exit poll-like projections of who was in the lead between the two main contenders the Congress and the Akali Dal-BJP combine. The display of the surveywas capable of influencing the result in favour of one party or the other and was a violation of Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the Commission said in the notice. Section 126 says: "No person shall display to the public any election matter by means of cinematograph, television or other similar apparatus." As the channel continuously showed the Insta Poll despite the notice, a case would be registered against it, the Commission said.
