HYDERABAD: Title-holder Karnataka recorded a five-wicket win over Tamil Nadu in a third round match of the South Zone K.S. Subbaiah Pillai Trophy round-robin one-day cricket tournament at the Gymkhana here on Tuesday. Nothing went right for Tamil Nadu. In the very first over, R. Sathish dropped an easy catch when opener Bharath Chipli, who went on to score 27 with five fours, slashed one to point off medium-pacer Ganapathi after Karnataka began its chase of 195 in 50 overs. As the innings progressed, the Tamil Nadu bowlers started losing rhythm and their misery doubled when the close-in fielders were not equal to the task in latching on to some difficult chances or in converting some easy run-outs at crucial stages. This was in contrast to the brilliant fielding by Karnataka earlier in the morning, which saw four Tamil Nadu batsmen run-out. Consequently, Karnataka, thanks to a responsible knock by C. Raghu (64 not out, 115b, 5x4), recorded a comfortable win. With the exception of K. Shree Vasudeva Das (76, 117b, 4x4), none of the Tamil Nadu batsmen showed the inclination to stay at the crease on a track. Hyderabad suffered a humiliating 91-run defeat at the hands of Andhraafter V.V.S. Laxman pulled out of the event by formally informing the Selection Committee about it. This decision did not go down well with the Hyderabad Cricket Association Secretary, N. Shivlal Yadav, who felt that Laxman had let down the team by doing so. "I could not understand why he took the decision. Not being selected for World Cup does not mean the end of everything. The boys were terribly disappointed," he remarked apparently referring to the star batsman's exclusion from the World Cup squad on Monday.
The scores: At Gymkhana: Tamil Nadu 194 in 48.2 overs (K. Shree Vasudeva Das 76) lost to Karnataka 195 for five in 44 overs (C. Raghu 64 not out). At Uppal: Andhra 232 in 49.5 overs (B. Manoj Sai 62) bt Hyderabad 141 in 45.2 overs (A.T. Rayudu 40). At RRC Stadium: Goa 211 in 46. 5 overs (Swapnil Asnodkar 74) lost to Kerala 215 for four in 45.1 overs (Manikandan 47, Jagadeesh 41).
