`Whip'lash on Telugu Desam Party

Special Correspondent

Chandrababu Naidu asked to spell out stance on Pothireddypadu

HYDERABAD: Government Chief Whip N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday dared the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), particularly leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu, to spell out their stand on the Pothireddypadu head regulator issue.

Proposing the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address in the Assembly, Mr. Reddy listed out development and welfare measures taken up by the Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy Government in two and a half years.

Explaining the Government's initiatives as part of `jalayagnam', Mr. Reddy said not even one additional acre of land was brought under irrigation in Chittoor district when Mr. Naidu was Chief Minister.

This remark evoked objections from TDP members. Stating that the Government did not have a clear policy on irrigation, Nagam Janardhan Reddy (TDP) alleged that it was trying to pit one district against another. "We are not against Pothireddypadu project. But, there should be clarity in allocation," he said.

When Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy talked about Palar project which could irrigate about 10,000 acres in Kuppam, the TDP members shouted that entire water was being diverted to Pulivendula constituency represented by the Chief Minister.

Blame game

When Dr. Janardhan Reddy said that it was already three years since the Congress came to power and it could no longer "blame us for everything," the Chief Whip observed: "It is taking a long time for us to correct the legacy we inherited."

He complimented Dr. Reddy for sanctioning Rs. 121 crores from the Chief Minister's relief fund to 42,000 needy people in the last three years.

Seconding the motion, Devineni Rajasekhar (Congress) launched a diatribe against the erstwhile TDP rule, holding it responsible for the State being caught in a debt trap.

He also urged the Chief Minister to take the leaders of all opposition parties in a helicopter to show them the progress of various projects taken up under `jalayagnam'.
