A directive to check price rise

Special Correspondent

Officials, Congress legislators sing different tunes

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has directed officials to take stringent action against hoarders of essential commodities.

At a review meeting here on Tuesday, Dr. Reddy asked them to formulate market intervention strategies to contain prices of essential commodities. He directed them to procure 5000 tonnes of onion and assured AP Marketing Federation that he would allocate more funds.

Self-help groups would be asked to open retail counters in towns and villages to sell Government-procured onions, pulses and edible oils.

He said supply of foodgrain, pulses, edible oils and vegetables should be streamlined so that traders did not take advantage of the scarcity of the items. Dr. Reddy was informed that the price of tamarind might come down by February-end due to fresh arrivals and the exemption from Value Added Tax (VAT). They blamed adverse seasonal conditions for the shortage in pulse production and subsequent price rise.

They said AP Oil Fed had distributed 1.18 lakh litres of palmolein oil through Rythu Bazaars. He was told that there was no shortage of cooking gas.

CLP's concern

Meanwhile, the Congress Legislature Party expressed concern over the price rise and sought a review meeting with the Civil Supplies Minister.

Members of the CLP said kerosene coupons were being withdrawn in villages, Government Whips, S. Udaya Bhanu, D. Sridhar Babu and B. Vedavyas and CLP secretary E. Pratap Reddy told presspersons later.
