LONG-AWAITED: Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran handing over title deeds to a beneficiary on the Civil Station premises in Pathanamthitta on Tuesday.
PATHANAMTHITTA: Minister for Revenue K.P. Rajendran has said that the State Government is making a serious effort to provide land to all landless tribal families in the State in a time-bound manner. The Minister was inaugurating a Pattaya Mela (function to hand over title deeds) on the Civil Station premises here on Tuesday. He said the Government was trying to provide land to the maximum number of landless families in the State during the next four years. As much as 71,000 acres of excess land identified was yet to be made available for distribution among landless people owing to legal wrangles. The Government was trying to settle the legal issues, and talks had been initiated with the Advocate-General. He said 3,000 acres of excess land had been made available for distribution so far and 20,000 more families would be benefited. The Minister said the number of landless tribal people in the State would be around 22,500 in official records. The Tribal Welfare Department was chalking out schemes to provide houses to all houseless tribal people, he said. Title deeds were distributed to 245 families in different parts of the district at the function. The Minister distributed them to 14 tribal families. Minister for Transport Mathew T. Thomas inaugurated the distribution of possession certificates. A total of 212 families in the district were given the certificates for land in their possession for years. K. Sivadasan Nair, MLA, presided over the function. P.J. Kurien, MP; Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, MLA; District Collector Ashok Kumar Singh; district panchayat president S. Santhakumari; vice-president A.P. Jayan; Additional District Magistrate B. Mohanan; Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretary K. Ananthagopan and Communist Party of India district secretary Mundappally Thomas spoke.
