Four of a family found dead

PATHANAMTHITTA: The four members of a family were found hanging in their rented house at Thirumoolapuram, near Thiruvalla, on Tuesday morning. The police said the deceased were identified as Sathyan, 38, painter, his wife, Sasikala, 33, and children, Sruthi, 7, and Vishnu, 4. The police have recovered two "suicide notes" from the house that reportedly hinted that Sathyan was being "blackmailed" by a "seven-member gang." The Thiruvalla police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

Cultural fete to commemorate poet

KOLLAM: The Thirunellur Smrithi Kendram, an organisation formed by friends and well-wishers of the late poet Thirunellur Karunakaran, will organise an annual cultural festival based on the works of Thirunellur from this year. The festival will be held to coincide with May Day on May 1, Kendram president Thengamam Balakrishnan said at a press conference here on Monday. This year's festival will be christened `Thirunellur Kavyotsavam' and will begin with the rendering of revolutionary songs. — Staff Reporter

Computer training for jail inmates

KOLLAM: The District Jail authorities, in association with the TKM College of Engineering, on Tuesday launched a month-long computer training programme for the inmates. District and Session Judge P. Bhavadasan inaugurated the programme.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Bhavadasan called upon the prisoners to make maximum use of the opportunity, as it would help them earn a livelihood after their release from jail. Personnel from the TKM College of Engineering will train the jail inmates .— Staff Reporter

Kadavu Resort gets global honour

Kozhikode: Kadavu Resort here has won the award of Trade Leaders' Club headquartered in Madrid in Spain. N.K. Mohammed, managing director of the resort, received the award at a function held recently in Spain in connection with the Spanish International Tourism Fair, FITUR 2007. "It also gave me a chance to introduce the tourist attractions of Malabar and the resort at a forum of businessmen and industrialists from over 40 countries," Mr. Mohammed said here on Tuesday. The award gave Kadavu enrolment in Trade Leaders' Club.

NGO association demand

KOZHIKODE: Kerala NGO Association district committee has said that in view of the prices of essential commodities registering a 40 per cent increase, the backlog of four instalments of dearness allowance due to employees must be disbursed forthwith.

A meeting of the association held here on Tuesday said that the instalments of dearness allowance ought to be paid as it had become difficult for employees to manage the family budget.
