NEW DELHI: Former State champion sprinter Sunny Sarkaria died on Tuesday in a city hospital where he was admitted last Friday following a road accident in which he sustained grievous head injuries. He was 24. A large number of current and former athletes, including internationals and coaches, among others, attended the funeral at the Lodhi Road crematorium on Tuesday evening. A final year student at the Law Faculty, Delhi University, Sunny was returning from Panipat on Friday, along with three of his friends, when his Maruti car overturned near Samalkha, Haryana. He slipped into a coma immediately and never regained consciousness. Younger brother of well-known sprinter Sandeep Sarkaria, who has represented the country at many international meets, Sunny had been the Delhi Schools and Delhi University record holder. He was declared the `best athlete' in the Delhi State championships in 2005 and was a member of Delhi's gold-winning short relay team in the National Games in Hyderabad in 2002. He was scheduled to go to Guwahati for the National Games but changed his plans at the last moment. A prayer meeting will be held at the Pahariwala Gurudwara, Greater Kailash I, at 3 p.m. on Feb.16.
