CUTTACK: The State Women Commission on Tuesday requested the CBI to reinvestigate the alleged murder case of Kanpur police station woman constable Manorama Basantray. This comes with Manorama's family filing a petition to SWC Chairperson Namita Panda. The 23-year-old unmarried constable was found shot dead inside the official residence of the then officer-in-charge Mrutyunjay Narayan Panda in March 2002.
A lower court had last month exonerated the accused persons Panda and another policeman Jugal Pradhan in the case for "lack of sufficient evidence".
In the meantime, Manorama's mother lodged a complaint with the Kanpur police stating that their family was apprehending danger following the release of Panda and Pradhan from the jail custody. Panda and Pradhan, who were working as sub-inspector and constable and were placed under suspension, have requested the Cuttack SP to lift the suspension and reinstate them in view of their exoneration in the case.
