Celebration time for Karapalli villagers

Staff Reporter

They are taken out of Chamakhandi panchayat, 6 km away, and included in Laxmipur

BERHAMPUR: It was celebration time at Karapalli village under Chatrapur block on Tuesday as the administration bowed to the demands of the villagers to include it in the Laxmipur panchayat.

According to a resident of the village, Simanchal Patnaik, the administrative officials have pasted a notice at the village community hall declaring that Karapalli would now be in Laxmipur panchayat instead of Chamakhandi panchayat. Elated by this news most of the villagers congratulated the village leader and former sarpanch, Ramchandra Patnaik, who had successfully motivated and united the villagers to succeed in their demand. This village would go to polls on February 21.

For the recent panchyat polls this village had been earlier included in the Chamakhandi panchayat despite a High Court order on December 8 to include it in Laxmipur panchayat.

It had led to agitation by the villagers, who had resorted to 10-day relay hunger strike and dharna in front of the office of the Ganjam district Collector from January 8.

Development concern

The inhabitants of Karapalli felt that if their village got included in the Chamakhandi panchayat, 6 km away, which already has 19 villages, implementation of developmental projects at their village would be hampered.

When after 10 days of agitation the villagers did not get an affirmative actionto their demand by the district administration, they had again approached the High Court.

And the High Court directed the administration to take immediate steps and include the village under Laxmipur panchayat, Mr Patnaik said.
