4.94 lakh students to take II PU exam

BANGALORE: A total of 4,94,232 students will appear for the 2nd pre-university examination to be conducted in March-April, according to a statement from the Department of Pre-University Education.

Bangalore South district has the maximum of 41,341 students appearing for the examination, followed by Belgaum with 35,926 students and Bangalore North with 35,209. Kodagu has the least number of examination candidates at 5,119, while Chamarajanagar has 7,175 and Koppal 6,807. — Staff Reporter

Tax on sugar units may be cut

BANGALORE: The State Government is considering a reduction in the purchase tax levied on sugar factories so that they can pay farmers more for sugarcane.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy disclosed this on Tuesday while replying to B.R. Patil (JD-S) during Question Hour in the Legislative Assembly.

Public Works Minister H.D. Revanna, replying to G. Krishna Palemar (Congress), said the Government had sought the Centre's approval to call tenders for concreting some stretches of the Shiradi Ghat on the Bangalore-Mangalore sector of National Highway 48. — Special Correspondent

Cauvery tribunal award termed unjust

Bangalore: The Institution of Engineers has, in a release, described the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal as "unjust and detrimental to the interests of the people of Karnataka."

The organisation, which has many technical experts, will study the 1,000-page document and make recommendations on how the award could be altered. — Special Correspondent

Workers told to strengthen party

BANGALORE: The State unit of the Samajwadi Party has taken the forthcoming elections to urban local bodies seriously and will make all efforts for the victory of its candidates.

Presiding over a meeting of State-level office-bearers and district presidents of the party here recently, party general secretary Madhu Bangarappa urged party workers to strengthen the party from the grass roots. The party should grow substantially in urban areas too, he said and asked the office bearers to concentrate on the forthcoming elections to the urban local bodies, said a press release. — Staff Reporter

Bharat Seva Dal to hold children's meet

Udupi: The Bharat Seva Dal National Integration Children's Meet will be held at the Vidyaniketan grounds in Kaup on February 17. Nearly 1,700 students will participate in the meet, said Bharat Seva Dal Udupi district unit president B. Bhujanga Shetty here on Tuesday. Students will sing patriotic songs, take part in the march past and participate in other activities. The aim of the meet is to inculcate among students qualities of bravery, sacrifice, simplicity, service and cooperation to help them become good citizens, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Palm-climbing contest for women

Udupi: The Udupi Zilla Nagarika Samiti will hold a palm-climbing competition for women at Malpe beach in the first week of March. Samiti secretary Nityananda Volakadu said those interested in participating in the competition should register their names within 15 days by dialling 9242218067. Suicide

HASSAN: A man broke into the house of Ms. Lakshmamma in Doddamagge village in Arakalagudu taluk — about 50 km from Hassan — early on Tuesday. A few neighbours saw him entering the house, locked the door and then tried to contact the police. But the telephone at the police station was dead. The man shouted from the house pleading with them not to call the police and to open the door. But the villagers refused to do so and instead sat around the house. Later in the morning, the villagers called out to the thief but there was no response. One of them then climbed onto the roof, removed a few tiles and entered the house, only to find that the thief had used the dhoti he wore to allegedly commit suicide by hanging. — Staff Correspondent

Jatra

BIJAPUR: The T.K. Patil Charitable Trust, headed by film producer Basanth Kumar Patil, has decided to commence a jatra during Mahashivaratri every year at Basanthavana on the city outskirts, where the trust had installed an 85-ft tall Shiva statue a year ago. Addressing press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Patil said religious, cultural and sports events would be organised during Mahashivaratri falling on Friday. — Staff Correspondent

GULBARGA: Students of the Nutan Vidyalaya Education Society have emerged the overall champions in the fourth Pratibha Gulbarga Youth Festival 2007 competitions, which concluded here on Sunday, and bagged the coveted Pratibha Rolling Shield. Inspector General of Police R.K. Datta, who was the chief guest at the valedictory function of the festival, congratulated the students of the society.

DHARWAD: Karnatak University, Dharwad, has on Tuesday announced the results of M.A first semester Political Science/Sanskrit/English, M.A third semester Sociology/History and Archaeology/Kannada, L.L.M first and third semester examinations conducted during December, 2006, according to a release. The results of B.Sc first and third semester, B.A Part 3 (non-semester) and B.Sc Part 3 (non-semester) will be declared on Wednesday, the registrar (Evaluation) has said in the release.

MYSORE: The second phase of the pulse polio immunisation programme was a huge success, particularly in rural areas, where 94.4 per cent children were covered, according to District Health Officer, P.K. Srinivasan. Only 75 per cent children from urban areas were administered drops. He said the total turnout was three per cent higher than the first phase held on December 9. He said 91,000 children were administered drops in about 300 polio booths in Mysore city. Booths were set up at railway station and bus stands and at the Chamarajendra Zoological Garden. About 6,300 para-medical staff were engaged in the work. — Staff Correspondent

Training programme

MYSORE: Jan Shikshan Sansthan (Institute of People's Education) sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, and the Department of Elementary Education and Literacy will start a computer application course shortly. The three-month course will be conducted on City Health Centre premises. On completion of the course, candidates will be given certificates recognised by the Government of India.
