MADIKERI: A census to determine the number of children in the age group of 0 to 13 would be undertaken in the district from February 26 to 28, according to official information received here on Tuesday.

Kodagu Deputy Commissioner, Subodh Yadav, who chaired a meeting here to review the preliminary preparations, asked the Deputy Director of Public Information to involve the taluk-level and gram panchayat officers in the exercise.

They must be given proper training in advance, Mr. Yadav said. One census team has been constituted for a cluster of 100 houses and each team would have three members. Headmaster of a high school or a senior teacher will oversee the work of ten such teams.

The Deputy Director of Public Information gave details of the census operations, saying teachers have been given training in the first phase and officials of the women and child welfare department had already taken part in the teleconferencing programme. Basic objective of the programme is to identify the children and admit them to schools.

It would help determine the number of students who could be admitted to the pre-primary classes in future.

The census would also help in getting details of the children who had remained outside the schools, languages spoken by them, migration pattern, whether they worked as child labourers and so on.
